Position Overview
The Medical Laboratory Technician/Technologist performs a variety of laboratory procedures to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. This role is responsible for specimen collection, testing, quality control, and ensuring accurate and timely reporting of results.
Essential Responsibilities
Laboratory Testing & Analysis
- Perform laboratory testing following established procedures and quality standards
- Review and verify patient results prior to reporting
- Communicate critical and abnormal results to appropriate healthcare personnel in a timely manner
- Maintain specimen integrity from collection through testing and disposal
Quality Control & Safety
- Perform instrument calibration, maintenance, and quality control procedures
- Follow all infection control, safety, and hazardous material handling protocols
- Maintain a clean and safe laboratory environment
- Report equipment issues or unsafe conditions promptly
Specimen Collection & Handling
- Receive and/or collect specimens and ensure proper labeling and handling
- Follow policies for specimen retention and disposal
- Adapt procedures to meet patient-specific needs when necessary
Documentation & Systems
- Maintain accurate records, reports, and documentation
- Utilize laboratory information systems for order entry, result reporting, and data retrieval
- Complete shift-end responsibilities and ensure continuity of operations
Professional Development
- Maintain competency in laboratory procedures and equipment
- Participate in continuing education, in-services, and training opportunities
- Stay current with laboratory standards, policies, and best practices
Additional Responsibilities
- Perform other duties as assigned
